Kicking Eve

on Wednesday, January 14, 2009

I went to a funeral yesterday. As I viewed the coffin, the flowers, the people in tears; I got angry. I was mad at death. All I wanted to do was kick Eve in the shin. Death was not in the Garden of Eden. The entrance of sin on earth brought the entrance of death. I might as well kick Adam as well.

But my anger (and violent tendencies) melted in the comfort of the words "Jesus wept". These words from the book of John are from the time Jesus stood outside of the tomb of Lazarus. Jesus would soon raise this man to life, yet outside the tomb, He wept. Death brings tears to the eyes of God. He created life, but we chose the sinful path of death. Although, the Lord had a redemptive plan to save us from our wicked ways, He still wept. He wept that on earth we will still have to suffer and cry at funerals. He wept for those who would choose to not accept His gift of life.

As Adam and Eve chose sin and ultimately death, God called to them in the garden "Where are you?" Sin had caused them to hide. God calls today, "Where are you?" The man who died, a believer in Jesus, stood in His presence and answered "Here I am." This time, there were no tears on the face of Jesus. He smiled as He welcomed His son home.
